The areas of work are divided into 4 steps
There is the possibility for you, as a volunteer, to stay the whole period in one organisation, but we recommend you to follow our 4 step-programme to get the most out of your stay as a volunteer in the community. By doing this, you will get an insight into how different community based organisations (CBO: s) work and use the experience from these three organisations when you are creating your own project.
Step 1 - Engaging in the community
There will be an orientation about what Miss Koch is doing and the issues they are dealing with. After, you will pick an issue from the discussion that you would like to work with. Together with miss Koch you will be able to attend focus group discussions organised in the community to talk about the topic. With girls from miss Koch you will do interview in the different villages in the community regarding your topic to elaborate it further - for example: Why is it that there is a rise in domestic violence? What is the course of it? and so on.
After your research, you will sit down with members of Miss Koch to exchange experiences and come up with a way forward of how best this issue can be tackled.
Step 2 - Broadcasting in the community
After completing the first period in Miss Koch, you will continue to the community radio, Koch FM. With the topic identified in Miss Koch, you will now use the radio as a tool to pass your information. Together with Koch FM-members you will go through your topic and come up with different ways of how your topic can be discussed on air.
The radio editor will choose which programme your debate will come in and together with the producer you will write a script and choose music for your debate. When the show will be aired depends entirely on the radio.
Step 3 - Creating change through film
The third period will be spent in Ghetto Film Trust (GFT). Together with Ghetto Film Trust you will go through the importance of using film as a tool to pass information. Together, you will be able to come up with a short script about your topic. GFT might also require your assistance in film production while down there for example filming, editing or just advising on the different scripts they have.
Step 4 - Own project
During the last stage, which is open to new ideas from you, we recommend that you choose one organisation from the ones that you have been working with and develop your topic further for example doing a short film about your topic, or producing a radio show or maybe writing a report for Miss Koch on your topic. This step is open for you to choose what you would like to do. It is also possible for you to visit other different projects in the community, and see if there are possibilities for synergies between you and the organisation.
Note
Kindly let us know if you are good at sounds, creating websites, research, photography, radio editing, music or anything that might be useful in the organisations so that we can plan for you to hold workshops on this.

Why do I have to pay to volunteer?
Volunteers pay fees to help sustain and cater for the local projects and communities involved. Your fees enable us to directly contribute to the goals and needs of the community you work in. The resources within these communities are very much limited and cannot support your costs for meals, accommodation, transportation and supervision.
The fee takes care of the following:
Airport Pick-up: on Arrival and Departure.
Orientation: Including important pre-departure information as well as on-site orientation on local culture, history and customs
Swahili courses: Language is very important in understanding what other people are saying. The volunteer will be given 3 hours of Swahili lessons every week.
Placement arrangement: All your placement arrangement and your well-being while volunteering is our big concern and priority. We ensure your placement is secure and safe. Our coordinator will provide whatever support you may need along and the organisations will always assist at the ground.
Certificate of Completion/Participation: You will be provided with a certificate showing your participation with us.
Contributions to the organizations: As you have read above this is a different mode of volunteering which requires you to rotate to 3 different organizations. Some of your fee will go to enabling these organizations to sustain themselves financially.
Accommodation and meals: you will stay with host families that we have chosen. Depending on your comfort you might either share a room with another volunteer or get your own room. Breakfast and dinner is catered for.
What is not included?
Transportation to the project (Volunteers will use public means to get to their place of work), tours and safaris, vaccinations, Visa, insurance, medical bills, leisure activities during night times and weekends.
